Siberian Huskies are generally healthy but may be prone to conditions such as hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and cataracts. Regular vet check-ups, a balanced diet, and proper exercise are important for maintaining their well-being.

Siberian Husky

History

The Chukchi people of northeast Asia have bred the Siberian Husky for sledding and as pets. Bred at the beginning of the 1900s, the breed traveled north with the gold rush phenomena and achieved fame through sled dog racing events, like the Iditarod. The popularity of the breed rose later, following its introduction to the United States and inclusion in the portfolios of kennel clubs.

Facts

  • The Siberian Husky played a critical role in the 1925 serum run to Nome, Alaska, where they helped deliver life-saving medicine during a diphtheria outbreak.

  • Despite their wolf-like appearance, Huskies are not closely related to wolves and are fully domesticated dogs.

  • Huskies are known for their unique blue eyes, though they can also have brown eyes, one of each color (heterochromia), or even parti-colored eyes.
