Pembroke Welsh Corgi

History

The Pembroke Corgi originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales, where it was bred as a herding dog of cattle and sheep. It is widely believed that the breed's ancestors originated as farm workers and herders in Wales, living off the gear that was excavated from the banks of the River Gwaun. The breed appeared to greatly increase in popularity in the 20th century for the most part due to championing the breed by British royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II.

Facts

  • The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is one of the smallest herding breeds recognized by kennel clubs worldwide.

  • Unlike its cousin, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the Pembroke typically has a naturally bobbed tail.

  • These dogs were once thought to be enchanted creatures ridden by fairies in Welsh folklore.
