History
The Great Dane was first bred in Germany as a hunting dog and guard dog for boars. It is currently thought that the breed originally descends from a Central type of Mastiff and was developed from both modern Irish Wolfhounds and shed dogs. Historically, the Great Dane became a favorite breed of dog in the 19th century and was known for its formal appearance and lack of energy. In 1880 the German Kennel Club introduced formal recognition of the breed as the "Deutsche Dogge" (German Mastiff).
Facts
The tallest dog ever recorded was a Great Dane named Zeus, who measured 111.8 cm (44 inches) at the shoulder.
Despite their name, Great Danes do not originate from Denmark but were developed in Germany.
