Overview

The Dachshund is a small, lively breed that is famous for its long body, short legs, and bold drive. The Dachshund variety has three coat types (smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired) and two sizes (standard and miniature). Dachshunds were affectionate in nature and curious in disposition and are all-around excellent companions to both families and individuals.

Health

Dachshunds are prone to health issues such as intervertebral disc disease (due to their long backs), obesity, and dental problems. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding jumping or excessive stair climbing are important to maintain their spinal health and overall well-being.

Dachshund

History

The Dachshund was created in Germany during the seventeenth century to hunt badgers and other creatures that were specifically adapted to burrowing. The uniquely shaped badger trap was in exact accordance with the body of the Dachshund, allowing them to easily pivot and enter burrowing tunnels. Over time the Dachshund became popular as both hunting dogs and household pets.

Facts

  • The name "Dachshund" means "badger dog" in German, reflecting their original purpose as hunters.

  • Dachshunds were once considered a symbol of Germany and even appeared in the 1972 Munich Olympics as the official mascot.
