Boxer

History

The Boxer originates from Germany in the latter half of the 19th century and is descended from Bullenbeiser and English Bulldogs, originally bred for the bull baiting and hunting of large animals. The breed was taken to the world market after the end of World War II due to its intelligence and strength, in turn leading to its rise as a preferred dog that was desirable for use by military and police forces.

Facts

  • The name "Boxer" is believed to come from the breed's tendency to stand on its hind legs and "box" with its front paws during play.

  • Boxers were one of the first breeds used as service dogs for the blind in Germany.

  • Despite their tough appearance, Boxers are known for being gentle and loving with children, earning them the nickname "gentle giants."
