History

The Alaskan Malamute is one of the oldest Arctic sled dog breeds, arising out of the Mahlemut people of Alaska. They were bred to draw heavy loads over long distances in the extreme cold. During the gold congestion, their popularity increased as they were used for transportation and carriage supply. The breed was officially recognized in 1935 by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Facts

  • Alaskan Malamutes are not built for speed but for endurance, making them ideal for long-distance sledding rather than racing.

  • During World War II, Malamutes were used as search-and-rescue dogs in Greenland due to their ability to withstand freezing temperatures and their strong work ethic.
