Alaska Malamute is a powerful, endurance-oriented breed known for its strength, stamina, and friendly nature. For the breed for heavy sleds in basically rigid arctic conditions, they are loyal, affectionate, and make excellent family companions.
Alaska Malamute is usually healthy but can suffer from conditions such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and chondrodisplasia (a form of dwarfism). They also have a high risk of bloat (gastric torsion), so they are recommended to feed small food throughout the day.
The Alaskan Malamute is one of the oldest Arctic sled dog breeds, arising out of the Mahlemut people of Alaska. They were bred to draw heavy loads over long distances in the extreme cold. During the gold congestion, their popularity increased as they were used for transportation and carriage supply. The breed was officially recognized in 1935 by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
Alaskan Malamutes are not built for speed but for endurance, making them ideal for long-distance sledding rather than racing.
