The Sphynx is a highly distinctive breed widely known for their lack of fur and their wrinkly features. Despite the lack of fur, the Sphynx does, however, require regular grooming in order to maintain healthy skin. They are very affectionate cats that need a lot of attention, and their behavior will improve greatly once they are around other cats and/or people.
Sphynxes are generally healthy but can be prone to conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and skin issues like dermatitis or yeast infections. Their skin must be kept clean and moisturized to prevent oil buildup.
The Sphynx breed was first originated in Toronto, Canada, in the year 1966 when a baby cat with no hair was born. Though in the past there were examples of cats bred to be hairless, the modern Sphynx cat species was created by selective breeding from the 1970s and early into the 1980s, when it gained official recognition with the show cat breed registry, resulting in it becoming a distinctive and popular breed with a following.
The Sphynx is not entirely hairless; it has a fine layer of downy fuzz that feels like velvet to the touch.
Due to their lack of fur, Sphynxes lose body heat quickly and often seek warmth by snuggling with people or curling up under blankets.
