Overview

The Exotic Shorthair is often described as the "lazy man's Persian" due to its similar appearance but shorter coat. It has a flat face, round body, and a calm, affectionate nature, making it an ideal companion for those who prefer a quieter, more laid-back cat.

Health

Exotics are generally healthy but can be prone to conditions such as polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and brachycephalic syndrome (due to their flat faces). Regular vet check-ups and proper dental care are important for maintaining their health.

Exotic Shorthair

History

The Exotic Shorthair was developed in the 1950s by mating Persian and American Shorthair cats with the addition of further crosses of other short-haired breeds. Breeders were aiming to create a cat with a combination of the distinct looks of the Persian cat but with the look of Persians and American Shorthairs having been bred to be a cat that not only has a distinctively attractive personality with a strikingly beautiful look but is also a cat to be able to withstand regular grooming without causing the owner any difficulty in keeping the cats looking neat and tidy. The Exotic Shorthair gained widespread support in the 1960s from the cat club and was acknowledged as an official breed by the Feline Governing Council in the same period.

Facts

  • The Exotic Shorthair was originally created to compete with the Persian in cat shows but without the high-maintenance long coat.

  • Despite their short coat, Exotics still require regular grooming to prevent matting and keep their fur healthy.
